The all-wood logs are precision-cut for a smooth, splinter-free feel. They are treated with a stain that will preserve and extend the life of the wood, so this set will last for generations.Since the logs are stained in a traditional manner, the dyes used can rub off. The building set should not be used on carpet or other absorbent surfaces, which might be stained by the coloring.A replica metal Frontiersman included. The blocks encourage fine motor skills, as children manipulate the pieces, and cognitive skills, as children learn to problem-solve. Children also gain practice in following instructions as they build the cabin laid out in the instruction manual, and they develop their creative side while they invent and build their own structures.Lincoln Logs are a great toy for more than one child. Since the set comes with more than 80 pieces, kids can build a house together or divide the pieces and create neighboring homes. The versatile blocks are a great tool for collaboration. Frontier-Era Set Captures a Different TimeThe Classic Edition tin offers easy-to-follow instructions for a Frontier Cabin with a slanted roof and a chimney. The pieces stack to mimic the look of traditional log cabins from an earlier era, and the set comes with a high-quality, die-cast frontiersman. Children will love playing with their new structures even after they are built, as they imagine an era of log cabins and raccoon caps. 86 all-wood pieces, including richly stained logs and roof slats. Light on logs. Heavy on odor.
Bought this set augment another set (Lincoln Logs Collector's Edition). I have always loved Lincoln Logs, and my kids liked the other set so much that I'm trying to build up the inventory in order to put the quietus on further internecine warfare and bickering. Here are some comments for prospective buyers:* Off the bat, this set smells fairly powerfully of rancid vegetable oil or something along that line. I have no problem with "Made in China" but I do have a realistic view of managing OEM manufacturers and how stuff like this can slip through the cracks in even a really good specification. The stinky logs will have to go back to the seller.* These logs have a rather off-putting grey color that does not match other similar products of my experience.* For thirty-odd bucks I am not overly worked up about how few logs there are, but the mix is a little odd and the tin does seem, erm, generously proportioned for this particular set.* The logs are compatible with my other set, so mechanically, they're fine.* K'nex / Hasbro/ whomever seem to have mismanaged their trademark a little because I am definitely having trouble finding a compatible, non-smelly addition to my current Lincoln Log collection. There seem to be two or more versions of "Lincoln Logs" that are differentiable at a distance only through good-quality pictures of the packaging, which are of course not always provided. If you're willing to set them out in the sun for a day or two, I imagine the odor will vanish, but looking at the whole picture, I'm going to return these and try something else.DAYS LATER: I am adding a star to my overall rating because I got lazy about returning them and spread the whole set out in the hot sun on the hood of one of my dad's old junk-heap cars in the back yard for an afternoon in a successful effort to kick back the stank. That said, I would also add that playing with the set for a while confirmed my opinion that the log assortment is demonstrably peculiar. There are not enough 3-notch logs to really get going on a "big" house, and of course there are eight hundred and nine single-notch logs, presumably because they count up faster. I cannot imagine the ostensible purpose of having a single four-notch log, but, well, there it is: the set contains only one four-notch log.

Nostalgic Lincoln Logs that foster creativity. 86 pieces
The really good part about this tin of Lincoln Logs is the nostalgia factor. For our generation that grew up with these, it recalls a time not so long ago where the only limit to what we could build was our imaginations. Piles of Lincoln Logs would get turned into some really neat things, and not by following an instruction manual but by creating. This tin of Lincoln Logs is very much the same. The tin itself is nostalgic and provides a place to store the logs between uses. The container, while large and wide, is way bigger than the 86 pieces inside, so don't expect a tin full of logs. 86 pieces sounds like a lot, but since they are of varying size, there are limits to how much you can build. Plus the price is a bit of steep for what you get. Nonetheless, this tin is good, old fashioned creative fun that can be enjoyed by anyone with an imagination, I just feel that there may be better values in Lincoln Logs out there. If you love the retro tin and plan on using it to store these and other logs, get it. If not buy the logs separate and save some money.

Not quite "Original".
I bought this set for my grandson because it was advertised as the "Original". Had I not owned the "Original" myself as a child, I probably would never know the difference. It say's its made from wood; what kind of wood is still a mystery. The can is huge; much larger than necessary for what is actually in it. The true "Original" tin was roughly the same height but about a third of the volume of this one. When I removed the lid, I expected to be overwhelmed with the aroma of those wood pieces that I still remember from my childhood. Well you can forget about that because whatever the pieces are made of; its not what it used to be. Not that it's bad; it's just not "Original" as it is purported to be. The pieces also seem to be smaller than I remember; but hey, I was a little kid back then. Although I don't think so, I might be mistaken about the smaller sizes. The set is quite okay, but I think boasting it as "Original" is a stretch. A more accurate description would be "Newer Unimproved Version of the Original Lincoln Logs". (Of course you would never hear that out of the mouth of marketing) I'm not entirely disappointed; I suppose my beef is that I paid a premium for a piece of nostalgia and received a marketing smokescreen that is worth about a third of what I paid for it. Like a fool I truly expected "Original" to mean "Original". It's still a good and durable gift.

Well made fun toy for kids
I used to play with these as a little kids in the 80's and was surprised to see that they still make these. I bought these for my four little kids, since the really enjoy building all types of different things with their legos. I thought this would be a great addition to their toy collection and they would really enjoy building with these. The kids (Ages 6, 5, 3 and 1) all really enjoy playing with the Lincoln Logs. Upon seeing they had new toys to build with, they all got really excited.I was glad to see that these are still very well made and should last a very long time. These are also easy to use and build with so my kids really have a fun time with this toy. The kids love that they can either build the buildings on the box or make their own.I will definitely be buying more Lincoln Logs to add to the collection.

Perfect gift
This was a gift for my two grandchildren and they were very pleased with it. They will add it to their collection of Lincoln Logs. The best part was that it arrived very quickly. I had tried to purchase it in the stores but they were sold out.

Not sure why the tin is so huge, but the product was as my husband remembered it - so it made a special gift for he and our grandson.
